<![CDATA[Saint John of the Cross | Technology - Blog]]>Thu, 26 Nov 2015 06:04:36 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[We Heart Peer Learning!]]>Thu, 06 Feb 2014 17:41:37 GMThttp://sjctech.weebly.com/blog/we-heart-peer-learningIn their regular classroom, the 1st graders have been studying letter writing and parts of a letter.  In computer, we've been studying keyboarding with a special emphasis on the shift key, the delete key, punctuation, and spacing.  Mrs. Drinkwater and I decided to combine the two and have the students write Valentine letters to their parents.  And because it's always fun to have a buddy, we asked some 8th grade helpers to assist in making the letters super special with border art, colorful fonts, and clip art.  I don't know who had more fun today--the big kids or the little kids!

After discovering the game-creating app Sploder in the Digital Sandbox, and after diving in headfirst and teaching herself how it works, 8th grade student Mary Walsh-Hilf offered to share her impressions of this program...


"Sploder is an interesting website that helps you create. It reminds me of Minecraft, but the best part is when you get to play your game. My game is not published yet, but I can test each level after creation. You can make about three different kinds of games, and there are lots off add-ons to make the game more interesting. You can make the game as complicated as you wish. I highly recommend this website if you have a passion to create."

Tina is at a sleepover.  One of the girls is snoring loudly while she sleeps.  On her phone, Tina records a video of the sleeping girl.  (1) Predict what Tina will do with the video.  (2) Then predict what will happen to both Tina and the girl.

<![CDATA[4th Grade Examines the Digital Divide]]>Tue, 10 Sep 2013 16:42:56 GMThttp://sjctech.weebly.com/blog/4th-grade-examines-the-digital-divideAfter learning about the digital divide and the disadvantages it poses, the 4th graders engaged in a social experiment to really try to understand what it's like to have limited or no access to technology.  Asked to find the answers to five specific questions about the country of Iceland, half the class used the Internet, and half the class used reference books.  As you can guess, the group with Internet access easily answered their questions, while the group without became frustrated.  When asked why the frustration, one student responded, "Books are good, but what if the books you have don't have the information you need?  That's why we need the Internet, too!"  Another student noted how unfair it is that kids like her can't use technology to do research.

<![CDATA[1st Grade Buddies Help Out the Kindergarten Class]]>Wed, 04 Sep 2013 13:54:25 GMThttp://sjctech.weebly.com/blog/1st-grade-buddies-help-out-the-kindergarten-classNew things can be intimidating sometimes.  That's why the 1st graders offered to act as Tech Buddies today for the Kindergarteners.  Remembering what it was like to be in the shoes of the brand new students, Mrs. Drinkwater's first grade class kindly and excitedly volunteered to act as guides on the side to their Kindergarten counterparts.  They showed the Kindergarteners how to log on, how to use the mouse, how to click and drag, how to close windows, how to use the class website, and how to log off.  These experts were a big help as you can see, and we can't thank them enough for their help!
